David joined The Independent at its founding in 1986 as a foreign correspondent and investigative reporter. While in Washington DC, he tracked the special counsel probes of Bill Clinton, and in New York, he broke news from the United Nations, notably ahead of the Iraq War and was on special assignment to cover the East Timor War. He also covered the trials of Martha Stewart, John Edwards, and Omar Abdel-Rahman. David was the first foreign reporter to interview Sarah Palin in Alaska about her national ambitions and was US Editor of The Independent from 2009 to 2016. Other assignments took him to China, South East Asia, and South and Central America. He has been a runner-up as UK foreign Correspondent of the Year and shortlisted for the George Orwell Prize. He has been a contributor to CNN, ABC, NBC and the BBC and has written investigative pieces for Esquire and Monocle.
